Hispanic workers enjoyed significant gains in employment in 2004, but the concentration of Latinos in lower paying occupations contributed to reduced earnings for the second year in a row, says a recently-released report from the Pew Hispanic Center.

The Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies (AHAA) has launched a new foundation that will conduct market research into the buying habits of Hispanic consumers.

At nearly 40 million, Hispanics are the largest ethnic group in the United States, and big-name retailers like like Target and Wal-Mart are waking up to the growing influence of the Hispanic population and its potential buying power.


Capital hunt challenge for Latinos
Despite their growing numbers and economic clout, Latino entrepreneurs often have difficulty securing investment capital due to a lack of connections to the venture capital community.

  • Frances Martinez Myers, a senior executive at Fox & Roach/Trident LP in Philadelphia, will serve as Chairman of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), a 14,000-member nonprofit trade association for Hispanic real estate professionals.
  • Brian Gordon has joined HYP Network as Senior Vice President of Network Sales. HYP Network is the leading independent publisher of Spanish language yellow page directories in the United States.

Chavez talks trade with Castro
Presidents Fidel Castro of Cuba and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela are promoting their own Boliviarian Alternative for the Americas as an alternative trade pact to the U.S.-backed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).


Ecuador's ousted leader besieged
Protesters chanting "Killer, killer, killer!" besieged the Brazilian ambassador's home in Quito in an effort to prevent Ecuador's ousted president Lucio Gutierrez from fleeing the country.


Chile women fight over presidency
Polls suggest that the winner of a televised debate for the presidency of Chile could become that country's first female president.


Outrage at Falklands definition
Argentina has expressed outrage at plans to include the Falkland Islands as a British overseas territory in the new European Union constitution.
